Hey Mr. Lovecraft. Sorry I never got back to you. I got super slammed at work and that flowed right into me getting ready for Halloween. Hope the season is finding you well. Our haunt structure is built. Now we are doing the detail work and decorating.

Hey Mr. Lovecraft. Good to hear from you. Hope all is well. Hauntcon was a blast. My wife and I split up and went to different classes so we managed to gather tons of information on a variety of subjects. Took courses on business, lighting, scenic painting, prop programming, how to motivate actors, etc. and did some make and takes. The garage sale was kind of disappointing. Only 4 people brought stuff. But the show floor was kind of fun. Not as many vendors as I hoped would be there. There were some no shows, but I bought a hot foam kit for my wife, spooky zombie contacts for me and a EFX-TEK prop controller micro chip. The classes were the best part. Got lots of great ideas for this year's home haunt. My wife and I plan to start devoting weeks to prop construction starting in July. Also, made some good contacts at the show. Are you familar with the yahoo group TXFX? It is a posting board for home haunters around texas. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TXfx/.

I just got my hauntcon tickets and booked a hotel. Are you going to go?

haha... yes we are cut from the same cloth. We are the exact same way. I actually start buidling my haunted house in August now just so I can take my time and draw it out as much as possible. And October 1st the graveyard goes up in the front yard. I actually put in my request for vacation for October the 30th, 31st, and Nov 1st as soon as the season is over. I know what you mean about the products too well. Usually Garden Ridge and Michael's start first with their Lemax Villages. Every year I buy my wife a new one for her collection. I've got a home depot credit card I can't ever seem to payoff because every year I just add to it buying more wood for the haunt. Oh I can't wait to get started.

Actually, I'm not a big fan of The Nightmare Factory which is a very close name to The Factory Haunt. Nightmare puts all their scares off to the sides of the haunt path like museum exhibits so when you walk into a room it is clear where the scare is going to come from. Really hurts the experience. They did try to mix it up with multiple path ways a couple years ago, but still the scares were very obvious. The Factory Haunt was very unique and only popped up a single year. My experience with them is very similar to your happiest haunt memory where we were the only ones there so we were descended upon by chaos. Eek Evil Clowns everywhere.

Sounds like our experiences with Terror and Torment are very similar. I think I liked both better when there were off Anderson Lane. There was much love in it then. Now while the production value has gone up, sometimes the actors main purpose seems just to control the flow of patron traffic. I've dealt with lots of actors almost breaking character to keep us trapped in a room until the group in front has moved on. When Terror first did Pitch Black, at Northcross Mall, it was actually pitch black. You couldn't see anything and you had to just slide across the walls while something was clearly in the room with you, breathing, and at points something hairy seemed to brush against you. It was excellent. The first year in Round Rock it was really bad, 06, agreed. But I chalk that up to new location adjustment. I think they did much better with the lanterns this year too. Torments costumes are top notch, but I think I liked it better before they broke it into two haunts. I agree with you the length of it made it better before. But I did like the off kilter moving room.

We also did Thrillvania for the first time last year. We really enjoyed it. The house was amazing. Love all the detail there. The actors in the clown house were really energetic too. Only downside at the whole place was the Junkyard. Halfway through the zombies decided to quit for the day and just started leaving while we were still there. We did chat them up a bit though. My wife had actually gotten one of them to break character earlier. He was in a business suit so she said, "Look honey, he must be a Dell zombie." :P

Haven't been to Screams before. Is it worth it? Sounds like a mixed bag from your comment. We did go to Chaos at Texas Scaregrounds for their Nightmare Before Xmas event. It was sad that so few people showed up, but the haunt itself is HUGE. It just goes on forever. Literally, with no one else in there, it took us a full 40 minutes to walk through. I can only imagine how long it must take when they are fully staffed and have lots of patrons in there. Talking to you has gotten me all in Halloween mode again. Time to start building some corpses and giant spiders.

Hmmm... this system is kind of funky. Well here is what I wrote this morning:

Great to hear from you. I love to meet other Halloween fanatics like us. We try to hit every haunt in Austin too. Last year I think Austin Haunted Forest was our favorite. I like House of Torment and Mansion of Terror some years, some years I don't. I definitely look to them for the latest trends. But also have lots of criticisms of them. I'd love to hear your thoughts. I wish The Factory Haunt was still around. They are my favorite in recent history, they were a Toxic Accident theme where everyone turned into mutant clowns. Was about three years ago.

My wife and I are definitely going to Hauntcon. We both put in for vacation at our offices. I was going to start looking into hotels this weekend. How about you?

If you are down we should get together for a drink sometime. Maybe you'd be interested in checking out our home haunt this year or hitting some of the local haunts together.

I sent you a long rambling message through the side link, but I'm not sure it went through. Did you get it?

I wish I had money to go to Hauntcon, I have never been to a haunt convention. I'd like to see what they are all about.

As far as working for haunted houses, I know that Mansion of Terror uses volunteers and pays some people. That is where I worked this last season. I don't know if House of Torment is all paid or a mix. Granted we do the boo for the love of it, but I'm not sure I would recommend not getting paid.

Basically, if you work a night, it is very hot, and physically demanding, not to mention that you tend to get bruised, scraped and have to dodge the occasional punch. That being said, if the haunt owner won't at least give you minimum wage, go somewhere where the effort is appreciated. It's too bad Nightmare Factory is not still open, everyone got paid, there were no volunteers.

Whatever you do, volunteer or paid, make sure you are having fun. That is the real point. No one is getting rich in this industry, even the haunt owners have day jobs. But once you get a few good scares under your belt, you'll know why you do this.

I have heard there may be a new house opening up, that is being put on by vets of several area houses. So, if I get more info, I'll pass it on, that way you will have choices. Try to find the haunt that is best for you, be it raw and in your face or more into character and story.

I'll end this here, as there is nothing that will get me rambling more than talking about haunted houses. I seriously love this crap. Just so you know, I got started when I was about your age as a way to make a little extra cash between jobs. Once I got a "real" job, I kept working haunts. It's an addiction.

It sounds like you got the bug, and you haven't even traumatized anyone yet. So if you have questions, I'll be happy to give you my thoughts on it all.

House of Torment Austin, Tx, My wife and I went to this haunt early in the season when there werent many people going to haunted houses yet. They were fully staffed with about 20 actors and had not much buisness so we ended up being the only ones going through the haunt. All of the ghosties and ghoulies descended upon us with a ferocity that can only spring from the deepest depths of hellfire and boredom. It was fantastic. Every actor was on us like stink on a warewolf. Everywhere we turned we ran smack dab into a monsterfest slam dance party. I cant even remember half the haunt i had sooooooo much fun. I will come back to this haunt and hopefully work at some capasity with the owners sometime. I LOVE THIS HUMBLE HAUNT.

My observation has been as long as it is a labor of love it doesn't matter if it's a crew or the actors. The actors will become just as good as a crew especially if they are working on it regularly and go to the conventions. The crew if they don't h…
