HauntUniverse.com - The Haunt Industry Network

Ok, Haven't posted anything in a while and since this is a new year.. lets try this...
What Scares you??? As haunters, we know we are hard to scare.. so if we find out what can scare us.. haunters that is.. imagine how much it would scare the public...so... what scares you.. think about it, post it, read others and get ideas on what you can add to your home haunt or professional haunt!
Hope this helps...

this is a hard question. its so hard to scare a haunter................ i would say that the best thing to me in a haunt is misdirection. but it has to be good not an obviuous thing but the hidden well thought out misdirection. i think thats the only way to get me to jump. Clinton Il has Terror on Washington Street they do pritty good with this.

Good information.. and I agree.. it has to be done so well that we aren't looking around.. possible, misdirection then drop panel?? Follow up with lights and good sound or horn??

What I see happening in most haunts is startles... not scares. And they have one after another after another. Startles definately have their place, but should be part of a mix of different scare tactics.

What scares me is atmosphere and having "down-time" between scares so you have time to freak yourself out wondering what and where the next one is. Also, having an actor look like a prop and letting the customers see him and make the decision that he's not real. That way, when he moves, the real scare is that they can't believe their own senses.

But, most kids today don't have the attention span for psychological type scares. They want startles and gore. So, do you design your haunt for you? Or for what the public seems to want?

Great answer Kim... and your right.. alot of people want gore right now.. I am an old monster guy.. you know the shadow on the wall... your imagination is what scares you the most... and as you said "So, do you design your haunt for you? Or for what the public seems to want?" I quess it could be a little of both... all the above are good anwsers... can't wait to see what is next...
I hope this is good for all of us... I know this will help in our haunt... we are looking to expand 6 new scenes... use the anwsers on here to add to yours as well...

Wow odd but I am skiddish as hell. What scares me oddly enough is when i'm in position and a fellow actor comes through the backstage and bumps into me. Tunnel vision is a killer heh heh. I more define that I easy to startle but to truely scare me is tough, I love the long drawn out doubt your senses type thing. That gets me every time.

I used to do my zombie in a two door box, as people walked up they could see me in the box, what they didn't know was that i controlled the doors... so when they got to the first door, all you could hear was them saying "I aint going in there" and once they say that I move to the side where they can't see me.. makes them even more nervous... I get where you are coming from... thanks Charles...

My observation has been as long as it is a labor of love it doesn't matter if it's a crew or the actors. The actors will become just as good as a crew especially if they are working on it regularly and go to the conventions. The crew if they don't h…
