Ok, I will start, Why do I do what I do in the Haunt industry..
Easy... I like attention.. I love art and Effects, mix those and you get me. I love makeup (monster stuff not the beauty kind) and being able to transform yourself into something that people can't tell if it is real or not. (which always baffles me, I can't recall ever meeting a real zombie)
So Why do you do what you do in the haunt industry?

I do what I do for the pure enjoyment and satisfaction that it gives me, regardless of success. Don’t get me wrong, we all want to be successful. But I truly believe many of us, at some point or another; have done what were doing for free. And if we weren’t successful, our passion and love for the haunt industry would drive us to continue doing this to some degree just for ourselves.

My Grandmother was an artist, not a working artist but nonetheless she was amazing. When I was very young, I used to stare in awe as she sketched my toys and action figures. When she would leave I took her sketches and worked my own magic onto them. I would color over the sketches adding blood, severed limbs and other things clearly indicating I was watching more than just cartoons.

My Grandmother also lived across the street from a Haunted Attraction. This along with my healthy dose of horror films (I wasn’t supposed to be watching) consistently inspired me to create dark and frightening imagery. By the time I was in fourth grade, I was already over store bought costumes. So with the help of my Mother I developed my first original character, a half-man/half-werewolf creature for a Halloween costume contest. It was not well-received as I was told by numerous teachers and students parents that it was not appropriate. I was so stoked that what I created sparked such an outrage. It just made me want to keep doing it, if for nothing else, shock value.

Halloween was not enough for me only celebrated once a year. So my older brother and I would play Haunted House in our basement setting up little scenes underneath of sheets supported by cardboard boxes. It was so much fun that my uncle would even join in. He would lie on this table, covered in blood (ketchup) and have a rubber spider moving in and out of his mouth. I thought that he was the coolest.

Whether I am creating a piece of artwork for me or someone else, developing a character or just throwing on some make up to scare the dog, I benefit from every second. I have produced several home haunts, volunteered at professional haunts and now through my artwork I offer design and marketing services to the haunt industry. I can’t say that I always knew I wanted to be in this industry. Mostly because growing up I didn’t realize it was an industry, but I knew whatever this was I wanted to be a part of it. And it’s always been because I love what I do.

Matthew,

Your Grandmother rocks... I am right in line with you with the fourth grade, I did a decaying mummy out of crept paper and red water paints, would be a pleasure to be able to work along side you sometime.. A great write up and I for one appreciate your love for our industry...

I'll be at MHC as well. Everyone should stop by my booth for Raven's Wolf, and I'll be teaching several seminars on acting and costuming.

I do what I do becuase I love the thrill in scaring people, also I appreciate the skill in making death, blood, and gore look as real as possible. I'm in it to start my own attraction because every site I visit absolutely dissapoints me. (except the trail of terror in wallingford ct.) Last but not least, I am in it to bring back the halloween spirit that I remember as a child. Where has it gone. I will smile no matter how horrible of a mood i'm in if I see a decorated lawn, no matter how corney it is................

I love everything about it...from year round designing and making props to scaring. The best part is the research for themes, ideas, props. It just amazes me the talent of the fellow haunters out there!

Sorry folks- been away from the forum for a while. The transformer found a home with a buddy of mine. Will probably become a jacob's ladder, if he doesn't kill himself in the process.
