I would like start a discussion on mold making because I myself have many questions,I am a very good artist but have had a difficult time reproducing my cretions. I have been teaching myself the art of prop and mask making by trial and error mostly error. With each new mold I get better at it but materials and time are getting very costly. I think many of us could benefit from a discussion on this feild. I'm sure even the experts as well as the newbies can learn new tricks from the knowlege shared.

My first question is about Wet Clay Dams

I have found that when using wet clay for damms for my Ultracal 30 molds my plaster around the clay becomes chalky. is there a way to seal the wet clay so it dosn't affect the plaste?.

Pick up a can of Crystal Clear spray and a can of dulling spray from an Art store like michaels. First seal the clay wall with 2 light coats of crystal clear. Once that is dry, put one light coat of dulling spray over that. The Crytsal clear creates a barrier but it creates surface tension that will make the ultracal bead up. The dulling spray breaks the tension so the stone will brush on smoothly.

I belive I may have found another cause for my molds getting chalky. I have been hitting the sculpture and wet clay dams with a silicone spray, I belive the oil in the spray may be affecting my ultracal. My last mold I made I watered down some car wax with 90% rubbing alcohol and had pretty good results.

I use Kleen clay I get from Columbus clay I belive it is sulfer free but I'm planning to do a test with a small batch of silicone. I've been thinking about doing brush on silicone molds with my clay sculptures and making wax masters, so I don't have to cry when a big piece of mold chips off. I'll just make a new mold as many times as I need. Something I plan to expeirement with I want to find out if the wax will soak into the Ultracal when I bake it out of the mold and if the latex will still gel to the surface well. I may start just doing my sculptures with wax to begin with. I've been planning to use sheet wax for dams to make smooth parting lines as with the moist clay I just cant get my flanges as flat and smooth as I would like them to be.

Sorry folks- been away from the forum for a while. The transformer found a home with a buddy of mine. Will probably become a jacob's ladder, if he doesn't kill himself in the process.
